Abstract
With the rapid increase among Korea aging population, various health promotion approaches have been applied to prevent increasing medical expenditures and enhance quality of life for this segment of population. National Health Insurance Corporation(NHIC) has been providing various health promotion services for the insured either by the name of health support services or by the name of health promotion services for the insured since 2004. A few attempt, however, has been made to provide the practical evidence of the effectiveness of these services.
The purpose of this study, therefore, is to examine the effectiveness of some of these services (i.e., case management services for patients with chronic disease, post-health check-up services for people at risk, exercise programs for the elderly, and community-based health promotion centers).
Data for the elderly participants in these four services between 2007 and 2008 have been gathered as follows: physiological changes of 14,200 hypertension, 5,274 diabetes elderly patients, 76 obese elderly persons, 296 health center participants, and 471 participants of exercise program for seniors. T-test and McNemar test were conducted with SPSS Statistical packages (ver. 13.0) to examine the changes between before and after the services had been provided.
The results of this study showed that systolic and diastolic blood pressure, glucose level, BMI, physical function, and some life styles have been significantly changed. Future services should be provided by the categorization based on older adults¡¯ physical function and disease status. In addition, long-term effectiveness of these program after the end of short-term services provided should be examined.
